Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery marks its 140th anniversary this weekend, hosting a special programme of events to celebrate the landmark.

The museum building was officially opened on Sat 28 Nov 1885 by the then Prince of Wales, who would later become King Edward VII.

Kicking off the birthday festivities, a special cake-cutting ceremony will be held on Fri 28 Nov, as well as live poetry on Demand from award-winning Brummie poet Bradley Taylor, and a performance by the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Trumpet Club.

Throughout the rest of the weekend (Fri 28 Nov – Sun 30 Nov), there’ll be loads of other free activities to get involved with. Visitors are invited to embark on a ‘Party Hat Trail’ around the museum while drop-in creative workshops offer the chance to create your own mini museum.

The My First Museum Taster Tour is a bitesized tour of the venue designed especially for little ones, and there’ll be opportunities to go behind the scenes with 15-minute Hidden Spaces Tours.
