Birmingham Indian Film Festival is set to return later this month, bringing 11 days of exciting screenings and special events to the West Midlands.
Running from Thu 27 Jun – Sun 7 Jul, this year’s partners include mac Theatre, Mockingbird Cinema, Light Cinema Cineworld Broad Street and the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire at Birmingham City University.
BIFF forms part of the UK and Europe’s largest South Asian film festival, and is set to showcase everything from blockbuster premieres, classic flicks and emerging filmmakers to innovative experiments with VR and computer games.
Organisers also say this year’s edition will include more screenings featuring BSL-interpreted Q&As than ever before.
Opening night at mac Theatre will see the Midlands premiere of US indie drama, Paper Flowers, which stars Deadpool’s Karen Soni. Afterwards, there will also be a post-show Q&A with director Mahesh Pailoor.
Other highlights include a special Midlands preview of Lionsgate’s first venture into South Asian cinema, Kill, produced by Bollywood icon Karan Johar, a screening of the first three episodes of the Candian comedy series, Late Bloomer, and two breakthrough feminist pieces Sthal and Wakhri, the former having won one of the top awards at the Toronto International Film Fesitval.
The festival’s pioneering LGBTQIA+ film showcase, Too Desi Too Queer, is also set to return with a programme spanning everything from heartwarming love stories and eye-opening documentaries to insightful shorts, all of which champion and amplify the voices of South Asian queer individuals.
