Renaissance: Tale of Us + Sasha | Fri 18 May | Boxxed | from £22.25
Most techno acts can’t count composers as diverse as Nils Frahm and Jah Wobble amongst their influences, but Tale of Us are a duo with an eclectic taste in music – an eclecticism imprinted on their endlessly experimental sound. Sasha, on the other hand, is a DJ so revered that in 2004 Mixmag questioned whether he might actually be the second coming of Christ; and it’s easy to see why, based on his borderline messianic consistency over the years. Tale of Us and Sasha have been Renaissance’s flagship artists since the label’s inception, and this event sees the two come together for a back-to-back set. See our feature here. www.skiddle.com
Sum Cellar: Outlook Festival Launch | Sat 19 May | Amusement 13 | £9.05
Things come full circle this Saturday: back in 2015 Outlook Festival inspired the creation of Sum Cellar, and now the official launch party for Outlook Festival 2018 is set to be hosted by – you guessed it – Sum Cellar. Meeting your heroes isn’t normally advised, but we can’t think of anything that could possibly go wrong at this one, with accomplished DJs Chimpo, Sam Binga, L U C Y and more at the helm. The sheer number of five-star reviews left on Sum Cellar’s Facebook page bears testament to the event’s popularity with those in the know, and we’re sure the bass-heavy brand will continue to bring the heavy this coming weekend. www.skiddle.com
Habits: Lindsey Matthews | Sat 19 May | Monastery | from £11.25
From her hometown of Swansea to her current London headquarters, dubby tech selector Lindsey Matthews’ travels across the UK metaphorically mirror her own progression as an artist, which in turn has led her to journey overseas to accept a residency at Sankeys Ibiza. For this show hosted by Habits, Matthews treks yet onwards to Birmingham with her uniquely minimal, skeletal sound in tow. It’s a sound seething with an undercurrent of menace, steeped in subtle sound effects and a quiet sense of foreboding. Expect a dark set brimming with gritty bass and downright sinister drops. www.skiddle.com
DNBCity BBQ: Hybrid Minds | Sat 19 May | Hawker Yard | from £9.05
Daytime d’n’b and sunny vibes at this afternoon of liquid breakbeats, sizzling street food and cheap and cheerful bevvies. The warm sound of melodic, rolling drum & bass (courtesy of DJ duo Hybrid Minds) is perhaps the perfect soundtrack to hazy summer days such as this, where the worries of the 9 to 5 grind are left far behind… www.skiddle.com
