Trancecoda: Eddie Halliwell | Sat 12 May | Boxxed | from £26.31
Word on the street is that beloved Birmingham venue Boxxed will no longer be hosting club events from July onwards – another blow for the local scene after the Rainbow Venues closed its doors for good back in March. And sadly, the Trancecoda team suggest that this might even be their last ever event, with rising costs making it more difficult to throw this kind of for-the-people party. It’s fair to say the dance scene in Brum is suffering at the moment, but with legendary DJ Eddie Halliwell at the helm, Trancecoda’s (potentially) last hurrah is bound to be nothing short of epic. Truly, that’s all we can ask for. See our feature here. www.facebook.com
Junglists Run Come: Skanking Ting | Sat 12 May | Club PST | £5 before midnight
If you’re a true junglist, you’re probably tired of the same old club nights: house, techno, garage, bassline… Even the so-called ‘jungle’ events are often watered down with that newer, more polished permutation known as drum & bass – jungle in a suit. Not so at Junglists Run Come, a night taking it back to the classic dub- and ragga-tinged, break-heavy sound that stood in stark opposition to Thatcher’s austere Conservative regime. Jungle was protest music: angry, of the streets; and it’s difficult to argue that much of that original anger hasn’t been lost along the way. Well, at least we have events like this to remember where it all came from.
KODEN: VSK + Stephanie Sykes | Fri 11 May | Amusement 13 | from £4
KODEN is renowned for showcasing some of Birmingham’s hottest underground acts, and this week is no exception. First up is Francesco Visconti, aka VSK, principally a purveyor of industrial techno in all its cold, inhuman glory; secondarily a crafter of crepuscular, ambient soundscapes… which makes for a set with a helluva lot of ups and downs. Stephanie Sykes, on the other hand, is a little bit more experimental, a little bit more leftfield, mixing in dub undertones along with a little bit of everything else. If you like your music varied and unafraid to journey outside the prescribed techno aesthetic, this one’s for you. www.skiddle.com
FORMAT | Sat 12 May | LAB11 | from £6
If you’re looking for a knockout night this weekend, round three of FORMAT could be your best bet – a night where the thick, chunky, bass-laden dubs will be flowing in abundance. Minimal vibes supplied by Gregory & Eduard, Black Sheep and BlitzOne. www.skiddle.com
