Immortalised in John Boulting’s 1948 thriller featuring an iconic and murderous Richard Attenborough as the sociopathic Pinkie, Brighton Rock is a passionate romance steeped in crime and gang warfare, a compelling mix of Romeo and Juliet and Peaky Blinders. The focus of Graham Greene’s original novel is shifted in Bryony Lavery’s stage adaptation to Ida, a hedonistic working class woman with strong morals, as she endeavours to save Rose from the clutches of a violent underworld and the dangerously unpredictable hoodlum Pinkie. The Pilot Theatre production has been scored by acclaimed singer songwriter Hannah Peel, creating a mix of musical menace and subtle romance. A critically acclaimed and ingenious spin on a classic of English literature and film.
