If you want to try something a little different, Matt Hartley’s play Here I Belong, recreates several decades of quaint English village life with the audience seated cabaret style amidst the performance. It’s a touching tale that focuses on Elsie and her life over sixty years. Beginning with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953 through to Elsie’s sweetly realised birthday today, it’s an intimate exploration of the significance of community particularly as a support system to help individuals grow, it will certainly engender feelings of happy nostalgia in older theatre goers. Hartley’s tender play is honest and heart warming with audience members given a real sense of traditional village life and, rather delightfully, everyone in the village hall gets a slice of cake.
