Jazz meets neo-soul on Saturday with sextet Odd Soul celebrating the launch of their EP Movies at The Sunflower Lounge. Despite being their first release, Odd Soul have been honing their live sound and compositions for 2 years; playing gigs for Sofar Sounds, Valefest, and London’s Café 1001. The eponymous single Movies offers a taster of what to expect. Tight, danceable grooves contrast lush, expansive choruses, without the focus ever straying from melodic and captivating performances. If you wouldn’t usually class yourself as a jazz fan, don’t let the label put you off – Odd Soul fuse modern pop sensibilities and soaring post-rock into a sound accessible to a wide audience, especially those who already enjoy acts like Tom Misch, Jordan Rakei and Poppy Ajudha. Support comes from the funky instrumental group Trampette and Czafari, a young Birmingham talent who will be opening the show with her smooth blend of alternative RnB and soul. Modern jazz is alive in Birmingham, and this event is certain to be one of the highlights of the year so far.
