#JeSuis is an important piece of contemporary dance developed by Aakash Odedra with a group of Turkish dancers he met in Istanbul. Stemming from the symbol of solidarity that #JeSuis represents, this piece aims to bring to light a group of misunderstood people whose image is manipulated by the media into something monstrous. The themes of displacement, refuge and instability resonate all too well in our modern world. Although no words are spoken, #JeSuis gives a voice to the voiceless, telling their turbulent tales through movement and questioning the irrational fear of multiculturalism. Though at times disturbing in its portrayal of oppression, its honesty is necessary and in the end glimpses of hope are apparent amidst the fierce fight for freedom.
