Field Music fit right into a very specific vein of erratic British art-rock: their music defies expectation at every turn, driven less by typical songcraft and more by a deep grasp of orchestral dynamics, along with sweeping 60s psychedelia. With new album ‘Open Here’ dropping this year, the band’s six-minute lead single, ‘Time in Joy’, is an irrepressible Talking Heads-type groove complete with billowing flutes, rubbery bassline and, of all things, mouth-popping noises. As always, Field Music march to their own (probably oval-shaped) drum, but ‘Time in Joy’ is generous in its weirdness – its playful spirit and stadium-sized snare making sure the whole thing lands with total satisfaction. The band’s core members, brothers Peter and David Brewis, have tried a whole number of different approaches to their songwriting down the years, even taking a three-year hiatus when it suited them: but right now, Field Music sound like their very best selves.
