There’s hardly a genre on Earth that George Evelyn – a.k.a. Warp Records mainstay Nightmares on Wax – hasn’t tasted, sampled and absorbed into his music in one way or another. An electronic magpie, and a master amalgamator, his hip-hop roots have enabled him to weave together the dense strands of disco, jazz, afrobeat, and classical music into a sonic patchwork that envelops the listener like a warm blanket. Nightmares have been working their magic since the mid-eighties, but new album ‘Shape the Future’ looks to maintain the high standard, marrying unhurried jazzy percussion to gushing, gorgeous orchestration: his eighth album to date, it’s also his most collaborative, with soul singer cameos abounding. You might wonder how this new material will be translated live, but the band have metamorphosed over the years into a formidable live act, that lush blanket of sound driven forwards by powerhouse live drums – nothing is beyond their reach.
