A spectacular arts disco mash up is going down at The Sunflower Lounge to say goodbye to 2017, as agit-prop collective Bad Girls and The Planet Art Project crash to create two floors of cultural ingenuity. Upstairs Bad Girls will turn the glamour and glitter up to seismic levels as they recreate New York’s legendary Studio 54 nightclub, whilst downstairs The Planet Art Project are planning a jungle paradise featuring some of the city’s finest underground artists.

Who’d have thought we’d ever be singing the praises of a Hungarian themed bar in the backstreets of Digbeth, what a joyfully diverse city we live in. The Ruin is causing quite a stir, inspired by Budapest’s bustling bar scene and features messed up decor, ‘industrial nerve-centre computer room’, distorted library and a growing selection of other random additions devoted to the the shabby spirit of rustic Hungarian pubs and bistros. Their first ever NYE party is sure to be something special. Rebellious Jukebox residents will be keeping things funky till the morning and the cheap fiver entry buys you a free drink and tapas. Egészségére!
Sun 31 Dec at The Ruin, 92 Floodgate Street, Digbeth, Birmingham B5 5SR £5 www.facebook.com
One of Harborne’s newest establishments is The Drunken Tiger speakeasy bar situated in the funky School Yard space off the High Street. If a bit of goth bleakery is how you would prefer to be dragged screaming into January then Funeral Nation at steampunk empire Cogs will suitably darken your senses. Two floors of edgy sounds with the ground floor creaking to industrial sounds cooked up by DJs Trilobyte and Tommi K, whilst upstairs Tanzmission will be laying down hard electro beats from ChimeraX and Exile. That’s two parties in one and best of all it’s free.

The worst thing about our city centre bars is the almost complete lack of outside space at most of them, there are some cool rooftop terraces though and the best of these is certainly The Bureau. With a strong reputation for mixing some of the best cocktails in town, it’s always a joy to sip on an Espresso Martini whilst enjoying the view from the roof. The food’s pretty good too. A unique place to take in the new year with DJs keeping it funky till fireworks time. Very limited availability so don’t hang about. Tickets can only be secured by ringing The Bureau on 0121 2361110.
Sun 31 Dec 7pm at The Bureau, 110 Colmore Row, Birmingham B3 3AG £10
If you fancy yourself as a gin connoisseur there really is only one joint in town. The Jekyll and Hyde are legendary purveyors of an insanely huge range of mother’s ruin and for NYE they are squeezing every ounce of joy from that little juniper berry. Downstairs will be jiving all night, without a hint of prohibition in the air, to swing music whilst you hepcats merrily chug gin goblets, cocktails and the ubiquitous bubbles. If you go the extra mile though (extra thirty quid really) upstairs in The Gin Parlour will be one of the famous J&H gin masterclasses alongside cheese and charcuterie provided by Colmore Row’s Anderson and Hill.
Sun 31 Dec 7pm at The Jekyll and Hyde, 28 Steelhouse Lane, City Centre, Birmingham B4 6BJ £10 (downstairs only includes 2 cocktails) or £40 upstairs. www.designmynight.com
