Ken Loach’s bittersweet comedy The Angel’s Share (2012, cert 18) passed many audiences by, which is a shame as it is a film with a huge heart, lots of laughs and an expertly orchestrated whisky robbery. The usual Loachian tropes remain of the working class struggle to exist in a perfidiously inequitable society and they are handled beautifully. But this is primarily the story of earnestly lovable Glaswegian lads and lasses executing a heist and securing a future. It recalls Bill Forsyth’s ‘That Sinking Feeling’ (1979) a similarly sweet Glaswegian heist movie, sinks are the target in that film. To celebrate the fifth birthday of the Birmingham Whisky Club and in association with Douglas Laing the audience will get to sample four classic whiskies at key points in the action.
