Art in motion takes over the city as the fifth biennial International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB 2016) springs into town taking over various venues and open spaces across the city to welcome one of the world’s most exciting and progressive celebrations of dance. A major highlight of this year’s festival include the world première of The Machine Show, May 11 – 14th, a live outdoor performance in Centenary Square with French dancer and choreographer Melanie Lomoff and hip-hop dance legend Salah with live music by French electro-rockers rinôçérôse. Further free world premieres include Black Out a performance somewhere between dance and graphic art where thousands of black granulated fragments transform the dancers’ world into a moving, pictorial composition and two new touring works, Corey Baker Dance’s Phone Box and ZoieLogic Dance’s Ride. Hofesh Shechter’s Political Mother plays at Birmingham Rep and a further night has been added to Carlos Acosta’s sell out show A Classical Farewell at Birmingham Hippodrome on May 7. The beauty of movement in every shape, style and form from ballet and contemporary through to classical, experimental plus a 3-day celebration of South Asian dance – with bells on (see Echoes Fri 20 May). Head to the festival HUB in the Municipal Bank Building on Broad Street for information on all things IDFB as well as a space to sit and drink in the atmosphere there are workshops and interactive sculptures.
