‘It is what it is and it ain’t nothing else’ is the non-nonsence title of Dan Flavin’s exhibition at Ikon, which centres entirely on the artistic manipulation of fluorescent light. Making the most of the Ikon’s variety of spaces the exhibition and its title underlines Flavin’s emphasis on the importance of context and therefore provides a perfect opportunity to see this cutting-edge gallery in all its multi-faceted, illuminated glory. Flavin’s emphasis on artworks that refer to nothing but their factual presence along with industrial materials and intense colour are clearly reflected in this visual exclamation mark of an exhibition. The final room is devoted to Flavin’s Tatlin ‘monuments’ architectural combinations of large white fluorescent lamps. This aptly iconic exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue and photographs of the artworks to take home so you can brighten your own environment with some of Flavin’s fluoro-lit world.
