Some people might look at The Hockley flyover and see; well, a flyover, lots of concrete and lets be honest, an urban wasteland. It’s a good job Newtown’s Jazz and Hip Hop star Soweto Kinch possesses a greater imagination than that. Because for the 7th time he will be transforming the grey asphalt monotony of the A41’s underbelly into a sprawling and colourful urban arts festival featuring an eclectic range of music and dance. Appearing alongside Soweto are a fine roster of performers including rapper and Jurassic 5 member Akil, self-taught Mozambican drumming legend Deodato Siquir and jazz funksters Nerija. A great chance to check out rising local talent such as saxophonist Xhosa Cole, Chris Gabriel and Brummie bass botherer Cornelius Wynter. This unique festival continues to break new ground and shatter expectations.
