After more than ten years of sonic adventuring, curious audiences and even more curious performers, the ever-unpredictable Supersonic Festival still teems with artistic ambition and irreverent surprises. It’s weekend of music, film, exhibitions and workshops curated by a team of fearless tastemakers. We’ve only a glimpse of the full line-up, but it’s already salivatingly good: the devastatingly physical, oxygen-defying soundscapes of solo saxophonist Colin Stetson; the enveloping, atmospheric embrace of Jenny Hval’s (pictured) featherlight, romantic new wave; the face-grinding, riotous jazz metal freakouts of Zu. And God only knows what mind-fuckery to expect from hyperactive Japanese noisecore masterminds Melt Banana, who’ve been unnervingly quiet since 2013. With so much more of the weekend yet to be announced, we heartily recommend you trust in Supersonic’s genre-defying sensibilities and book yourself in for the whole ride. A truly avant-garde, tightly-curated and rightly exalted experience (not remotely) for the whole family.
