London alt-rock five-piece Yassassin may have been named after a David Bowie song, but their vibrant post-punk energy evokes the spirit of The Breeders and Le Tigre, full of staccato drums, choppy guitars and big hooks. The band’s latest offering, single ‘Cherry Pie’, is a loose-limbed garage-rock clatter: underpinned by a rumbling Kim Deal bassline, adorned with charmingly light-footed harmonies, it’s perfectly constructed, even down to a cocky, accelerating coda that would make Siouxsie proud. Yassassin know exactly who they are and how they want to sound – which is all the more remarkable given they’ve only been around for a year. Visit the Hare & Hounds for a timely lesson in fiery Brit-rock.
