An eclectic mix of East African sounds with Arabic overtones and a Western sheen, Alsarah and her band transcend cultural barriers with their Nubian folk-pop. Subtle and warm, the Nubatones’s music flows from one shape to the next, never quite settling; but nothing feels out of place. Complex melodies and simple hand percussion provide the consistent thread throughout, while a broad and ethereal palette of production touches create a bewitching ambience. With last year’s sophomore effort ‘Manara’, Alsarah and the Nubatones proved themselves to be masters of a new type of fusion, dripping with confidence and control; don’t miss these unique song-weavers in their first-ever Birmingham appearance, at the Hare & Hounds.
